Italy Launches Fully Digital Schengen Visa System Starting June 1, 2026

Italy has announced a major transformation in its visa application system, introducing a fully digital Schengen visa process beginning June 1, 2026.

Under the new system, all tourist visa (Type C) applications will be processed through a single government online portal, marking a significant shift away from traditional embassy-based submissions.

Applicants will now be able to complete the entire process online, including filling out application forms, uploading supporting documents, paying visa fees, and tracking application progress in real time.

However, first-time applicants will still be required to attend one in-person appointment strictly for biometric collection, including fingerprints and photographs.

Italian authorities have stated that this digital transition is expected to reduce visa processing times by at least 40%, improving efficiency and reducing administrative delays.

Italy has also confirmed that its Digital Nomad Visa is already active, with consulates accepting applications since March 18, 2026.

Experts believe this move may influence other Schengen countries, with France, Spain, and Germany expected to adopt similar digital visa systems between 2027 and 2028.
