The United States Department of State has unveiled a new pilot program that could significantly reduce visa interview wait times for some international travelers.
Under a Temporary Final Rule published in the Federal Register, eligible applicants for B1/B2 visitor visas will be able to pay an additional $750 premium fee to obtain an expedited visa interview appointment at selected U.S. embassies and consulates. The program is expected to run from July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026 as a six-month proof-of-concept initiative.
What Does the New Fee Cover?
The additional payment is designed solely to provide faster access to visa interview appointments.
According to the State Department, applicants who choose the premium option may be scheduled for an interview within 10 business days, subject to availability at participating consular posts. However, the expedited service does not affect the actual visa adjudication process.
In practical terms, travelers may be able to bypass long appointment queues, but they will still undergo the same screening and eligibility assessment as every other applicant.
