US Reduces African Visa Processing Centres to 20 Hubs

Thousands of Africans planning travel to the United States could soon face a new visa application process following plans by the U.S. government to reduce the number of embassies and consulates handling visa applications across the continent.

Under the proposed restructuring, nearly 50 U.S. diplomatic missions currently processing visa applications in Africa will be consolidated into just 20 designated visa-processing hubs. The move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen visa oversight and immigration controls.

For applicants living in countries that do not retain full visa-processing capabilities, the new arrangement may require travel to another African country to attend interviews and complete visa procedures. This could result in additional travel costs and logistical challenges for many applicants.

Nigeria remains among the countries retaining a full-service visa processing centre, with Lagos included on the list of 20 approved hubs that will continue handling visa applications.

While affected embassies and consulates will continue providing assistance to U.S. citizens, emergency services, diplomatic visas, and special cases, routine visa processing will become increasingly centralized.

Travel professionals are advising intending U.S. travelers to monitor developments closely and begin their application processes as early as possible to avoid potential delays and increased appointment demand at the remaining processing centres.
